Why are stem cells important in gene and cell therapy?
Stem cells provide a self-renewing cell type that can potentially survive the lifetime of the patient. Stem cells also provide differentiated daughter cells (specialized cells of each tissue) that can replace diseased cells of the afflicted tissue(s). Gene and cell therapies utilizing stem cells theoretically improve a patient’s disease condition for as long as those modified stem cells live, potentially a lifetime.
