A customer came to Beckman Coulter to obtain an automated solution for cell plating, performing transfection reactions and screening the resultant cellular clones.The system needed to be designed, installed and fully functional in less than six months. Click
image to enlarge The project management team designed this Biomek® FX-based core system to handle a large capacity. The screening application to be automated for the customer runs for up to 110 hours and processes up to 500 lidded plates. Both custom and standard Beckman Coulter components were incorporated into this system. As shown, they are densely packed along the 3-meter ORCA® rail. Plate storage is managed between the Cytomat* 24 C and Cytomat 6002 incubators and the five plate carousels along the rail. The Biomek FX with four Matrix WellMates* (Matrix Technologies Corp.) placed in two stacks along the rail provide the liquid handling steps in the screening protocol. The WellMates provide fine control for dispensing bulk reagents and cells. A DTX 880 multimode detector, which is stacked over an ELx405* washer to maximize utilization of space on the core system, provides for detection of the assay screen. A tip lift provides for the constant supply of tips needed throughout the assay protocol and a delidding station manages removal and placement of lids on the microplates. The components used in this automated solution were chosen based on functionality, capacity, flexibility and quick delivery. Given our experience and success in delivery of this complex system Beckman Coulter was able to provide customer satisfaction.
