The Biomek NX, with a smaller footprint than the sophisticated Biomek FX, is available in multiple configurations, including a choice of either eight-probe or multichannel pipetting. The Span 8 pod comes with an optional gripper that rotates a full 360º for maximum flexibility in moving labware on and off the deck. The multichannel configuration is available with 96- and 384- channel pipetting heads for rapid plate-to-plate applications and assay miniaturization. The Biomek NX platform uses the same automated labware positioners (ALPs) as the Biomek FX system, such as tip loaders, wash stations and shakers, for maximum flexibility in performing various functions on the deck. An optional bar code reader delivers on-the-fly plate reading in one step with the plate movement, and plates can be read before and after pipetting to ensure sample integrity.

The size, flexibility and affordability of the Biomek NX platform makes it appropriate for an expanded range of applications in academic, biotech, biopharma, specialty testing and regulated laboratories. Ideal applications include plasmid DNA purification, cytokine ELISAs and protein purification and quantitation.

The new clot detection feature will respond to fibrin clots and re-dispense if appropriate, while a new septum piercing capability allows closed tube sampling for functional genomic applications such as DNA extraction from whole blood. Disposable or fixed tips can be used with the system. An integrated pump purges the fluid lines of the Span 8 head quickly and reliably, ensuring optimum pipetting performance.

The Biomek NX features a new open-frame design to allow future vertical workspace integration, for applications where limited lab space is an issue. The open architecture also simplifies the integration of devices on the left, right or back of the instrument.
